........of course it should be rebuit and it will. If you have ever been there and experienced the history, flavor and importance of N.O., you would know. Moreover, it is America's third largest/busiest sea port etc, etc.
.........I think the question is, "how should it be rebuit"? They will reinforce the levies and probably install a system (much like in the Netherlands) to dispere and keep back rising water levels. N.O. is too valuable culturally and stratigically to the country to let it go.

there are reports of the locals now looting all the electronic stores and they have no electricity. that makes sense.
when walmart was looted the 1 st thing to be "sold out" were all the guns and ammo.
just seen a report on the news that the emergency workers rescuing the injured from the hospital to make room for more victims were being shot at by the locals from the roofs in the neighborhood.
isn't New Orleans something like the 2nd worst murder capitol in the world.???
maybe this storm is some sort of natural selection, evolutionary way of cleaning up the neighborhood.
they had a 1 week notice of this potential disaster to evacuate and the people didn't listen.
its truly a sad situation, up there with 911, and the Tsunami but why didn't these people get a head start and get the hell outta there ???
IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY
global warming is real. its only gonna get worse.
why waste BILLIONS on rebuilding, evolve, move on its gonna happen again.
it seems like natural disasters on this magnitude are becoming a lil more common these days. whats next ???

Lgreanz,
A lot of those people that lost their lives and those that are now stranded in Louisiana and Mississippi had no way out. Not everyone is fortunate enough to own an automobile and a lot of people simply had to try to ride the storm out in their homes. I would not call that ignorance or stupidity, simply less fortunate.

.............the more I watch the damn news the more I realize how desperate the situation is! It is true that people had ample notice to evacuate but many could not (from what I understand). N.O. is for the most part a very poor society and I think a lot of people were simply unable to move. Or too fat! Damn some of them are fat! Anyway, I think also that given storm histories missing the area, people weren't excepting the gravity of the situation.
..........along with poor hoods comes poor judgement and this is why the looting and random shootings that are reported. Fucked up in our minds! Desperate acts on their parts.
.........one last thing. All that I gathered from radio and TV is great. Glad we have it to show the world. Maybe it takes this for people to wake up! This country's dependancies on oil is rediculous!!!!!!!!!!! Gas prices in Atlanta at $6.00 a gallon, are you kidding me. We need to and should have been already, involved heavily on alternate methods of energy! Not oil!
..........one more thing again. I feel that the local and state govn't authorities in N.O. failed the people. There has been too much time that passed before things were put into action. For example, the national guard for the region was deployed almost immediately. That was around 2000 soldiers for a city of millions in distress. I wonder if all the looting and shootings could have been prevented to a degree?
God be with em

"Evolution," "Natural selection"???? You should know better kama'aina.
Your intimation that the vices that some people in New Orleans have was the invitation for this type of destruction is disheartening.
Let's draw a parallel for the purpose of illustrating your, at least in this instance, ignorance.
Sept. 11 is viewed by many around the world as a result of the vices and actions of a few Americans and expecially our foreign policies towards the Middle East. Do you also think that Sept. 11 is justified based on this reasoning?
Now you might say that man has free will and that it was man's actions that perpetrated the Sept. 11th trajedy, but God acted in this latest disaster. However, the people that acted in Sept. 11th also felt as if they were carrying out God's work.
How would you feel in you were counted among the millions stranded, homeless and with an uncertain future? How would you feel if you were stranded on a roof with no water and you somehow knew that a fool on the internet somewhere is saying that God found you worthless and your city should slip away into the past like a modern day Atlantis?
As far as global warming goes, do you drive or ride a bike when you go surf/work? Do you do anything to mitigate the global warming problem? Think Global act local, right?
As far as whats next, I would probably say the apocalypse, isn't that the endgame in your line of thought?
I guess it's safe to assume you won't be sending aid to the victims. I sincerely hope no hurricanes or other random acts of nature come your way. BUt if they do, I hope your attitude isn't reflected by people that are in a position to help you.
Think before you speak... then again maybe you did.

God didn't do it.
the north atlantic getting 2 degrees warmer over the last few years did it.
CO2 levels being higher than we have ever known mean that models for atmospheric change are meaningless. we're flying blind. global warming is happening and being ignored. NOAA officials have been fired for even saying 'Global warming' by this administration.
It was stated before 9/11 that a direct hit on N.O. by a catagory 4 or 5 would cause a massive disaster and nothing was done.
it can be rebuilt... just need to ask the Dutch for some help

well the guest are attacking, its okay.
maybe i did jump the gun by my statements , but i'll stand by them.
im just pissed off as to why the stranded unfortunate victims have to start behaving like inhuman animals.
A GUY KILLED HIS SISTER OVER A BAG OF FUCKING ICE !
EXPLAIN THAT. HE KILLED HIS BLOOD OVER FROZEN WATER.
in any other country or society the people would have banded together to help each other, and try to make order of the situation. instead they scream and yell and blame and keep on littering and fighting and raping and shitting and pissing in the buildings where they are temporarily confined to. have you heard some of this shit !
and then they point the finger at Bush and govt officals and the police
like they whirrled up the storm 10 days ago off of Africa.
my heart goes out to all the ill and infirm who rely on the health care institutions to stay alive, this is where govt officals really dropped the ball.
there are over 50 dialysis centers that clossed down in the state of louisiana alone. people are dying.
we can go on and on about how bad it is !
guest # 1 : ur statement is is truth some people are just less fortunate, but yes i would've expected them to walk with the two feet and legs that they were born with, thats what i would've done. I would've found a way to safety and i'm sure mostly everyone who views this message board would too. but due to ignorance of the potential disaster which they were warned about they decided to stay and party and ride out the storm.
guest # 2 :
i really dont have a clue about what your talking about so ill just answer to your statements.

NATURAL DISATER VS. JIHADIST CREATING TERRORISM
are you seriuos ?
I dont even want to get started on your opening statements because you wouldnt understand my feelings towards the Jihadist beliefs.
A natural occuring storm in our atmosphere and a group of 19 evil Saudi Arabian men flying jet liners into buildings and killing thousand of innocents are no comparison. there was an entire infrastructure behind the terrorsits to support them in america and kill americans and to drag us into battle. to create jihad, becasue they hate america and what we stand for.
all the hurricane had was warm water, sun and wind to fuel it.
I believe that everything happens for a reason, thats my mantra in life.
maybe the reason for this storms was to open up the worlds eyes as to how severe we are destroying our planet and that natural disaters have shaped and formed or earth for millions of years and they are real and have devastating results on man kind.
apocalypse is near my friend, are you ready ?
it might not be in our lifetime but in comparison to the history of the earth man kinds stay on this planet is just a drop of water in the bucket.
the signs are out there, increase in the # of volcanic activity, the boxing day tsunami, melting of the ice caps, increasing in the # of hurricanes and typhoons every year & one day we're gonna be the T rex, frozen in the soil.
and yes my friend WHATS NEXT ?
i'll be with Solo in the church of the open sky when the day comes.
and just for the record i made no mentioned of GOD in my 1st post.

ummm, ok, back to topic, regardless of cultural significance or "importance" it seems to be the logical thing to do would be to not try to keep the water out of where it wants to go. in the time it would take to repair the levy system and drain the water, construction could be well underway elsewhere. mankind seems to have a belief that technology can overcome mothernature when time and time again it just doesnt hold water. a larger stronger levy system would need to be built as the oceans rise, ensuring the next break to be more explosive and damaging than this one (this isnt the first time). the reality is that its a stupid place to have a city and the perfect place for a lake.

..............the water went where it wanted in N.O. because the tidal surge wasn't inhibited by the wetlands that used to be there. Man is to blame.
............I think at any given time "mother nature" can dish up something we cannot handle. We (mankind) have always battle against the forces and naturally will continue. We have made this region "important" to our economy and yes history. I don't agree that we can abandon this place, so there for reinforce in the best way imaginable. Oceans are rising and natural occurances are getting worse. But, certainly we can try to devise some system.
..............I'm sure some would say Honolulu is a stupid place for city and a perfect place for natural beauty.

............the debate is not based on nostaglia. Don't get me wrong. Many important resources are in the region and there is dependence on the region. Blasted oil and shipped exports are to name the important few. If you think that we can just up and move a major port such as N.O. to another location on our gulf coast and have it all work out, you are mistaken. Do you think the oil companies (with their oil platforms, refineries and piplines to the midwest and eastcoast) and the govn't who back those companies would take a chance on losing billions and compromise the security and stature of this country?
...........I think it is about economics mostly and not nostaglia. I am not an expert on how to quell rising water etc. There are places/countries in the world that have for generation, delt with water in their cities. Maybe we could learn a thing or two from them?

of course no is an important port, but resources? nothing there that could not be taken advantage of under a few feet of water. just because other cities are able to keep water at bay, does not mean it is a good idea. there is water on three sides of no, not to mention the fact that it is below sea level. sounds like a poor plan even to the layperson. the ghettos were the hardest hit, noone could convince me that it would be a good idea t rebuild those. simply put, as an action of economics, it makes more sense to rebuild elsewhere. im sure that being the knuckleheads we are, rebuilding will ensue, but if we remove all emotion from the issue, it is still a bad idea.

Greetings Comrades!
My sister is one of the many displaced residents of NOLA, and she probably lost everything. That being said she is one of the lucky ones because she had a car and was ABLE to leave.
At least a few of the people she knew are probably dead, some of them well known artists in the underground Jazz profession and various street freaks who made that city the fascinating place it was.
I really hope that when they put that place back together they don't make it into the Disney/Zataran's version of the city. Compare to what it would be like if this whole state was like Waikiki.
That being said it was amazing that things were so relatively stable seeing what kind of economic and social burdens were heaped on the majority of it's citizens. Over there the only choice for people is either work three jobs and starve or sell drugs and die early (or rot in prison).
I could walk through bad neighborhoods here and get some dirty looks and maybe beat up. Over there if I tried the same thing I would be dead. No questions about it. That's the price we pay as a society when we fail our fellow citizens.
