"Surfers have been the worst," Losch said. "They have the biggest impact on Hawaiian place names because they've named all the surf sites, beaches and breaks."
John Clark, author of "Hawai'i Place Names: Shore, Beaches and Surf Sites," said he is neutral about place names but he discovered while doing research for his book that the mo'olelo, the stories about an area, often determined the name of a place.
"In my mind you never truly know the meaning of a place name or the reason that place was named unless you know the actual mo'olelo, the story, that goes with that name," Clark said.

AHEM....
From '86 thru '88 the Gotcha Pro was held at Sandy beach. As many of you know Gotcha's local rep Jim Blusher(sp?) lived at Black Point during that period (still does for all I know). Potter stayed with him every year around contest time and was a daily guest at Lighthouse, and often Potter's by himself, hence the name. Also called Showers or Straightouts.
That's the facts Jack!
Here's some more for you. Anyone who knows who gave me my nickname should be able to get most of them.
-Who was Big Earl and why was his stance so weird?
-What color does every one of Charlie Schuster's boards have?
-When was the best day ever at Lighthouse Point? What contest was running the same day?
-Where is the Bathtub? Why is it called thus?
-What is the name of the little triangular piece of crap sticking out of the water inside between LH and the Point?
-What kind of dog did Nate the criminal have?
-Who was the best surfer/top dog at Lighthouse throughout the 80's and much of the 90's? Who did he usually surf with?
-What longtime Lighthouse crew member catches waves with a symmetrical paddling stroke (both arms at once)?
-What's the best water color for the 'house?
-Name at least 3 of the gangbangers from Palolo that used to surf every day at the 'house. Which one was ALWAYS drunk?
-Who does Remy always surf with?
-Why were so many of the regulars on the Local Motion team at one time?
-Who is the most famous LoMo team rider to have surfed the 'house daily?
-Which regular comes out around 1:00 every day and sells specialty imported foods/fruit, etc.
-Name 3 of the female regulars we've had.
-Which famous Japanese pro surfer was sent in during the 90's for being a pain? (by myself and aforementioned gangbangers)
-Who is Big Masa and who taught him his trade?
-Which famous young female surfer's dad was a daily face at the 'house for many years?
-Which past regular's dad played jazz music w/Gabe Baltazar and why is that regular the MAN?
-Which one of the Scrubs surfed the best?
Cmon bobble lets see it! Got thousands more without even trying. As you can see, I thew you some mulligans.

i am truly humbled by the level of your lightys trivia, ill try my best for our fearless leader.
1 big earl, no clue, cant wait to hear this one though
2 blue
3 ive heard you talk about that day numerous times, but i missed it so couldnt give you a date or contest
4 bathtub!?
5 i always called it "the lone paddler" cuz out of the corner of your eye it looks like some guy stuck over there
6 he had two, brown and black
7 Gordon Quigg w/ Brett Goodfriend
8 thats way too easy, i just hope i can surf like that when im what, 54?
9 ahhh, light green w/ silver highlights
10 gangbangers? you trying to get me shot?
11 drunk bald Charlie and Charlie Smiths brother(John?)
12 my guess is cuz the vp of the company at the time was out there daily n he figured that to be the best way to get more waves
13 depends on your definition of famous, for the most media coverage id have to go with Eric Phillips (all those Liberty House ads)
14 strawberry John
15 Amy, i cant believe i cant remember her name but there was the hapa girl who charged 8ft waves and slept w/most of the crew, and brotherRich, oh wait, does she warrant regular status?, how bout Yasmin, do i get credit for her?
16 ill guess on this one, hmm, how about, shit whats his name, the guy from Bali High?
17 dunno but if it is landscape Masa, i guess Mormon Corey would be responsible
18 Carissa Moore, damn she rips
19 dunno that one either
20 king of scrubs Davey White, with one of the Ho's hand-me-down boards, with an 8 sq. in. hole under the ball of his rear foot, could surf circles around the rest of the scrubs, unless it was over 3ft!

Pretty good, oh lord of the Scrubs. You suprised me on a couple of those. Here's the bottom of the page, upside-down.
1 big earl, no clue, cant wait to hear this one though
-Big Earl from Maui was part of the original Honolua kneeboard crew w/Ray Pino & others. His stance was close and nearly parallel, on a 9' tank!
2 blue
-Ding!
3 ive heard you talk about that day numerous times, but i missed it so couldnt give you a date or contest
-The day of the first Eddie Aikau, the one Clyde won. 4-6' and going all the way through the regular Lighthouse lineup to the knob.
4 bathtub!?
-Where Mildew always sits, aka Milton the smallish blonde haole guy that used to work for Schaper. The go-nowhere South bowl.
5 i always called it "the lone paddler" cuz out of the corner of your eye it looks like some guy stuck over there
-The Queen Anne, it's part of a wrecked sailboat.
6 he had two, brown and black
-Breed, not color, Akita, the bloodthirstly one
7 Gordon Quigg w/ Brett Goodfriend (R.I.P)
-You'll get credit, but I was thinking of Hamburger Patty.
8 thats way too easy, i just hope i can surf like that when im what, 54?
-Mulligan!
9 ahhh, light green w/ silver highlights
-Mulligan!
10 gangbangers? you trying to get me shot?
-Shon, Rolf, Stevie, Fred, and Gerard *hic* Those guys always had my back and still do to this day. Oh and it's been my observation that YOU are trying to get you shot.
11 drunk bald Charlie and Charlie Smiths brother(John?)
-OK credit for this one, since I forgot that Mike was Charlie Smith's brother. I once told Remy that Charlie smelled like beer and donuts. If you say this to Remy he will crack up to this day.
12 my guess is cuz the vp of the company at the time was out there daily n he figured that to be the best way to get more waves

-I was going w/Tony, but in Eric's mind, I'm sure it was him.
14 strawberry John
-You da man!
15 Amy, i cant believe i cant remember her name but there was the hapa girl who charged 8ft waves and slept w/most of the crew, and brotherRich, oh wait, does she warrant regular status?, how bout Yasmin, do i get credit for her?
-That'll do, pig.
16 ill guess on this one, hmm, how about, shit whats his name, the guy from Bali High?
-If it's Shuji Kasuya, then Ding!
17 dunno but if it is landscape Masa, i guess Mormon Corey would be responsible
-Now this is interesting, and a bit convoluted. Piece by piece: Yes landscape Masa. Little Masa was even smaller and his eyes bugged out like a pekinese. Little drove me to the hospital when I broke my back. Next, Tony, half Italian, half Japanese taught Big Masa. Tony now lives on Kauai and has like 13 kids. And Mormon Corey is Jehovah's Witness Corey, who is also the answer to 19.
18 Carissa Moore, damn she rips
-Ding!
19 dunno that one either
-See #17. And for part 2: because he turned me on to Steely Dan all those years ago.
20 king of scrubs Davey White, with one of the Ho's hand-me-down boards, with an 8 sq. in. hole under the ball of his rear foot, could surf circles around the rest of the scrubs, unless it was over 3ft!
-Ding! But this was a mulligan, y'know.

Took me about 3 minutes to come up w/those. Didn't even have to try. What is uninteresting, undesirable, a last resort to most, is to me, home, my favorite place. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. I am inextricably intertwined with that patch of ocean. And that includes all the other people who are similarly related to her. I love it when the crew is out.
Guess where my ashes are going?

Aha, weelll, ahem... Jimmy and Gabes son, Scotty were best friends in school, once when Scotty got beat up and got his bike stolen (by a large polynesian sort) Jimmy rode his bike around for days until he found the fool, whereupon as they approached a large embankment (both on bike) Jimmy kicked said large fellow down the embankment. Oh and the queen anne was well known to me, just thought you wanted a common name.
