Buy Pics of Yourself Surfing?
if you had a good day surfing, an no one knew about it, noone except yourself, does it make it any less than if the whole universe knew about your day?
i say, for the great majority of todays sheeple, this really is the case. if they don't tell anyone how good they are, how is anyone gonna know? they base their self worth on the opinions of other people. insecure, and risky.
make a difference people, and fight the urge to become famous and well known. in every book of wisdom there is the proclamation that "pride precedes the fall". why don't we learn?
we're a generation of idol worshippers.
but the idols we worship are turning into images of ourselves. go on andd admit it, it is pure VANITY.
wot, cannot? i knew that already.
gotta lose your SELF if you wanna move up to the next level.
like mozo. his pics were about the wave, the soul of surfing. not pictures of himself or some media-slave. he was rare.
vanity is the sin that took lucifer from the grace of the almighty. not accusing anyone, just asking that everyone THINK...

Kelly,
I interviewed the seven guys I knew about at the time. Heard there are like 20-30 on Oahu alone, with more on the way.

http://www.RipPanics.com
http://www.JimisPhotos.com (didn't want to say much)
I kind of like how the article came out. Will be published on http://www.AroundHawaii.com on March 1, and FreeSurf mag sometime in April. I'll send you guys a link as soon as it goes on the test page.

Jahsurfs, I should have responded to this a long time ago. Anyway, here goes:
When I surfed in front of the shack in LJ, a couple of guys actually called me out with my disposable camera. They thought I shot for http://www.surfshot.com, which apparently many locals just do not like. Like you said, it's a different business plan, but could be the next logical step for the guys out here.
Happening here in Waikiki now for the tourists (and beginner locals).

Jahsurfs wrote:<snip>Of buying an underwater cam, going to the local beach in the summer and doing the same thing. Sell those photos for a set price. The next step was to take reservations for a group of people if they wanted 3 or 4 buddies to rent a photographer for an hour or two and have a set rate. The next step was to grow the business to the point where I could have a small surf shop with this photo business running out of as well and having 3-4 underwater cams to rent if people wanted a cheaper route and take their own pictures. (Very hefty deposit required).

Surfshot is the business model I was referring too. I think there are several others trying to get momentum but I don't know if they'll have the same approach. i don't agree or disagree and often find myself bordering liking and disliking the service.
Sponge, the tourists were the primary target customer of what I was thinking. Then branching into different rental/$$ generating paths to off set the peak/down season roller coaster.
This is very odd this topic resurfaced. I recently came to a different conclusion than my earlier thoughts and a few days afterward saw a photo of me from a session a few weeks back. I think cell phones add more congestion than pictures. Cell phones are immediate updates and there is a lag time with photos (as little as an hour to a few day lag time). I think the person standing on the beach and calls to inform 3 or 4 buddies they have to surf 'XYZ' spot because it's thumping is more to blame than a photographer. I'm making a concious effort to not call anyone with a report unless I'm already surfing with the person or meeting them somewhere. I don't know...I just try to deal with it.
I actually enjoyed seeing the photo for one reason that sticks out. It helps keep the vivid memory alive of the stoke I had that morning. It keeps it fresh while other things in my life try to bring me down. I look at the picture and remember the happy thoughts, endorphines, smiles and vibe of that day. nothing more than that.
this is me, solo, or puhi, or clyde. what ever you wanna call me, it's fine with me.
i can relate to what jah says about his photo. it's just that for me, it's different. i guess it's ME that is the vain person whenever i saw photo's of myself.
me, and noone else put expectations on the photo's. this made it an ego thing, for me. i can't look at a photo and recall the emotions, most times. as a matter of fact, in non-surfing photo's, my facial expression almost always never revealed how i was really feeling.
if i could relive a good wave with a photo, then i'ld love to have photos taken. however, for moi, it suits no ther purpose than for self-evaluation. that is really not neccessary for me to have fun surfing.
surfing is like reading a book. then take a photo or video, it becomes like the movie. i much rather prefer books, because my own imagination is far better than any movie image. SAME thing with surfing. i prefer to remember the day with my memory, only. the memory will always be better than the photographs, ALWAYS.
i shudder to think what would happen if i had photos of my best surfing sessions, ever. i think they would cease to become my best sessions ever.
i agree with jah that the cell is worst than the camera, in the short term. one a good day, the cell phone will bring the crowds to an otherwise empty lineup. pictures have a delayed effect, they plant the seed in the minds of potential crowd contributors. sure, they won't be at rr's today, when you took the picture. however, MANY people who would NEVER have surfed rr's would now consider surfing there if they saw MANY photographs of the place firing. rr's was never as crowded as it is now. that was one of my hideaways in the middle of a crowded spot, rl's.
cameras bring awareness to TONS of people that otherwise, would NOT have knowledge of certain spots, or the quality of certain spots.
i believe it's not only the digital camera and cell phone that's to blame. i believe the chief culprit is the frikking internet, www, itself.
pictures wouldn't mean a thing if you didn't have instant access, anywhere, anytime, as often as you like. back in my day, we got one magazines once a month. evrything we knew about the outside surfing world came from only those magazines. very powerful.
today, the magz are going down, and fast. who needs them? the internet is way more accurate, free, and there ain't no big media spin on shit. the computer has taken over...
now, anybody can become somebody. just take a look at all these websites out there... think about it...
everything is diluted, watered down, and lost in the overwhelming mass of worthless trivial information that is known as the internet. sadly, the www is a reflection of we, as a race... sad.

well said. Cell phone is immediate crowd enhancer and photos are long term crowd enhancers, just add water.
The www comment goes back to my earlier post on page 1 or 2. So I completely agree with you on that point too. Surfing has been growing for many years but the www, photos on the www and cell phones have expedited the growth. They add to the growth faster, as they have with other facets of life too.
i have to admit, i got the sequence from the photographer and I have not stopped thinking about that session since. I've got the same hop in my step as I did that same morning post session. I was high on life feeling the stoke of mother nature and I feel the same way now. I'm excited to go surf chest high waves for lunch and it's a great feeling.
I definitely feel some stoke from it.
By the way bud, if I haven't mentioned this before. THat pic of you going bakside is sic. That's a great looking wave, I'd like to see that sequence if you have it. I imaging you tore the top of that wave like you usually do.
