Scars.

Postby HMARK » Tue Jan 04, 2005 12:08 am

How you figger? We all go out, and yet, we all come back most of the time unscathed. But get those times when you get the hammer-jammer, and you get those cute little reminders of what went before.

I figure we all got some scarrage to tell, so what the hell.

This could go on forever, but, I got enuf dings to fill a medical file for days. Been stiched up, coma tose, and forgot my memeory more than once, , but I wil keep it surf (or skate) related.

Incident w/ the wheeled - skating in college, went up a ramp that was designed not for skating, and came down on the side of my head. Lost conciousness. Lost where I was for 8 hours. Or who I was for that matter. Fractured skull in 2 places. Now i know why I get headaches...

Incident on the water - Surfing my favorite (FP) and small but hollow day - enjoying the shit outta it. Casually pull into a small barrel, and no come out. Head over heels, but cruising, ubtil I met the coral head. Busted right orbital, and mega stitches. No conciousness lost, but the stares coming up the beach kinda let me know I was fucked.

Incident w/ the retarded - playing Baseball, fucking around with a plastic ball & bat. On the side was some bro's palying around with a real Bat and ball. Long story short, got smacked in the forehead w/ the real Bat. 47 stiches and 2 metal staples later ----- Good as new!

Point is scars keep on reminding us of the experiences we have been fortunate enuf to have, or unfortunate, but they remind us of what it is like to TRULY BE ALIVE.

Cause if you aint got no scars - you aint been living.

Those with perfect skin - I congratlate you.

Nah.

Stories, Tales, input? Bring it on.

Peace.

surfed perfect north shore all morning, late season swell a year or two ago. no problems. decided that afternoon to go and surf crappy wind-chop 1 foot LH. tried to hit the whitewater at the end of a wave and the board came straight up and hit me in the upper lip. tore that bit between the nostrals away from my face, busted my lip and the cracked rail cut my face all across my cheek. nice.

oh, and i think rocky point has more of my skin than i have.
good thread :)

Scar on forehead- Getting ragdolled, but trying with all my might to hang onto my board, I am bear hugging it, but somehow the board is upside down and backwards. Board slides down and fin gashes my forehead.

Broken wrist- bombing a hill...and i was really drunk  Bone came out of the skin and everything, pretty badass. 8)

scars down my ass and along the small of my back- DOH backyards

big nasty scar on lower back- got run over by some asshole at DH

Big scar in middle of back- Longboarder dropped in on me, then bailed, his board came over the falls and axed me.

Many scars on feet, ankles, legs- Result of numerous reef encounters

skating... broke my ankle never got a cast for it so it healed back crooked. doctor now says if i want a straight foot he has to re-break my ankle and put it in a cast.

serious scars on my knees, shins, hips, elbows and face from ollieing down gaps, stairs and handrails

riding my mtn bike, i was hit by a car in a cross walk. driver ran the red light, plowed into me and i went flipping over the car as he sped away. injury was a bent tire and a cut on my shin. my friend said i was about 5ft higher than the car when i flipped over it.

surfing... kaisers, landed on that frickin' pole on my rib and broke my rib.

bowls, hit the reef and had a puncture the size of a dime straight in my wrist. you could see the muscle and veins. doctor said i just missed the artery. stitches needed, but none taken.

pipe, almost drowned

makaha got slammed into the reef, leash gets wrapped around the coral and 3 more waves slam me into it. resulting in cuts from my stomach ,shins, knees, back, and of course some wana in my hands and feet.
Everybody talkin, talkin , talkin dat trash

I figure the incident with the Wana in the Okole is best saved for a better time.....

Nah, surfing CW in 82, cruising on the inside after a choice set of waves, headed in by the ladder exit.

Wnet in to the shallows, and removing leash, li'dat, sat on the reef.

You allready know what happened next.

Mama pulling spines outta my upper ass cheeks, how the fucker got me there, I will not know. All I know is I climb out at point proper ALL the time now. Big surf or not, my ass aint getting pierced again...

too many too recall. but 2 summers ago i was just dying to get wet , so i jumped in at ermas just to get rid of the summer time blues.
was surfing that suck up right that the spongers love, not really surfing just taking off and bailing, watching the reef real close keeping my hands out and was pretty succesful from hitting the bottom.
Finally a good wave comes to me and I decide to pull in.
Im in there , in there, in there, then the thing just pinches and I bail out the back. Whoa that was close the reefs right in front of me but all is well.
Next thing I know. BAAM.
The baord shot back somehow , i dunno. Cracked me in the back of the head harder than I've ever been hit in my life. Was dazed and confused out there seeing stars, struggle to the beach covering my head cause the blood i straight pouring. Kick the reef on the way in resulting in another laceration, cuting some nerves in my toe.

Thank god my girl was on the beach catching some rays casue I needed help bad. If someone woulda seen me 911 woulda been called and I'd be on a backboard heading to castle in the ambulance with C spine precautions. I was covered in blood, and not doing too good.
We get in the car and I brace my spine and aply pressure to the wound on my skull, but we couldn't make it, my girl was tripping and couldn't drive so I told her to stop at the firehouse in Hawaii Kai and the fireman hooked me up with a wound check and some ice. He said the wound wasn't too bad but I knew I need to get to the hospital.
I ended up at straub ER, CT of the head and neck, X rays galore, stitched toe, stapled/stiched lower cranium. and all over a dribbly 1 foot wave.

After recovering I surveyed the board and it was destroyed.
The 2 side fins were bust off to the sides, there was a lateral crack on the deck and bottom of the board, and the rail were split from the fins back to the tail.

A few inches lower and i might have severed my spine, Lucky.
My head is fine now , I think, but the toe will never be the same.

that board tuned me up adder , i've grew playing sports without pads and have taken some pretty bad hits, but that one was the worst in my life.
when the stick hit me i heard a crunch, i thought it was my head but it was actually the board.
I still got the board if anyone wants it, I'll never ride thething again.

 Holy sh!t..you guys are krazy!

My best story..At the tender age of 15, I paddled out for the very first time in Hawaii on my brand new surfboard at Canoes. Piddled around a bit, looking at the reef and stuff. Alla sudden I look up, and here comes a wave...with frickin' 15 people, wall to wall heading right at me, everyone of them looking like this. Bailed off my board, and swam for the bottom. Guy caught me right across the shin, opening up a 6 inch gash, along with a 6 inch gash in my new surfboard.
Can't believe I kept at it....
Owoooooooo!!

damn...

some nasty spills up in here...

as for me, all skating related, busted a knee trying to gap the `zellers`gap, back foot slipped off and the knee craked sideways..very painfull...didnt go to the doctor...

busted elbow, when back truck caught rolling in on a quarter pipe, end of seesion, told myself, dont skate anymore, i did, and pd hard!"!!

5-0 grind to slip out and fall on my back off a 4 stair ledge...couldnt walk straight for a cpl days, was scared and went to the doctors...a freind has the footage somehwere, sd was nastiest fall he has seen in a whilw...

got a snowbopard in the face that was knocked out of my hands walking up the hill, busted a front tooth

as for surfing, worst expeirnce i can say for now would be the mouthfull of saltwater trying to avoid a wave...DONT LAUGH..

not to jinx myself but never had a nasty wipeout where I got sliced and diced, just major holddowns and a bounce off the bottom once or twice. As for in general--never a major broken bone or anything like that just concussions and sprains. Oh wait there was the time when my index finger got cut off, but i dont count that cause I was 5, the wind from a hurricane slammed a door shut on my finger but doctors were able to reattach it.

Only couple scars but no reefs here in Central Florida only Coquina shelf bottom which is pretty close,Anyways in Oct2000 at Playalinda, which is is right next to Kennedy Space Center .Right after 9-11 there was alot of the beach closer to Nasa was closed off due to tight security ,It was only knee to waist high chop crap.noone out either and that summer was the most sharks bites in along time before u know it Boom i feel a clamp getting tighter on my leg im like dam sharks.I paddled to the inside praying he didnt like what he tasted. Then i got to the inside and said im not goin let this shark ruin my session ,remember i live closer to orlando it takes 45 min to get to the beach. So i caught this little wave inside and pull up to see my thigh and blood was gushing out and nice little bites all in my leg. Then i knew it was serious.Luckly i had some good smoke before i got bite.I came outta the water and a park ranger came over and started screaming do u know your in a restricted area ,i drifted into iot.Im like bitch i got bite by a shark,Her face was :o .Anyways all i was worryed about was a blunt of crippy in the car.My girl came running up all freaked out.Im like no big deal its Florida ,these things happen all the time.Forreal in the summer u see sharks almost everytime u go out.Winter never ever see sharks if u do there huge. But ended up i tied a towel round my leg cause i had no insurance and didnt wanna get hit by the albulence bill.drove to hospital 1 hr home ,15 staples later all good.I also turned down albulence ride cause round here or i guess anywhere they make the news about a shark bite ,like theres killer sharks everywhere.i Didnt wanna be known as Shark boy i didnt think it was that big of a deal.Rob
