Is there surf within walking distance there?If so, much localizm?>Im not looking forward to getting in touch with Kala or the wolfpack.but i guess that guy is on north shore.Any help will help thks guys.

Ko'Olina! Ho..nice rooms!
There's a place that breaks off to the side a bit on a solid swell, but sketchy, sketchy...otherwise, even the closest place is a bit of a walk, but doable. Can get kinda crowded, kinda shallow, and if you get in the way, drop in, paddle behind, or yer just in the wrong place........might get a thumping. But I've surfed there event free, so you can too.

Remember you are a guest competing with the residents for a limited resource. Don't try to be too friendly unless someone else wants to be. And don't be a kook. I don't know your level of ability, but if you can't surf, get in the way, aren't aware of what the other surfers in the lineup are doing (so you can stay out of the way), and blow every wave, you will get absolutely no respect here in Hawaii. On the other hand, don't think that because you can surf, that you are anywhere but the bottom of the pecking order. Most spots in Hawaii have a crew that have been surfing the spot for decades, and it will take years to get anything but leftovers at many of them. Have a nice vacation.

Thanks for the help guys ,the reason i asked about westside hotel is i came to Waikiki marriott last summer and it was ofcourse like everyone knows packed to the fullest with longboarders dominanting lik a mutha fucker but thats what i expected but it was still lots of fun i did find a spot called publics and made wrong move of paddleing out on full tide torist.That spot blew me away cause there was only lik 10-15 people on it when all other town spots were atleast 50-75.Any im not a kook and held my ground well ive been surfing over 8 yrs here consitantly and feel like i can hold any swell size here on my home break,but the talent out there was unreal 10 yr olds killin it.and most of all everyone was respectful i took the scrapes but even those were sick 3 or 4 easy manuvers.Only problem i had was some bodyboarder kid was a local im guessing kept cutting me off for no reason i was in total position and he cuts me off ,he did it 2 waves in a row till next time i went up on that left and placed my board next to his head and he chilled but the surfers were cool as hell.Im just hopeing that that hotel in AUG is gonna have some surf cause im just a student and cant rent a car so only chance is right out front.So sorry for long story bt need to know if i should chance it there in Aug or stay on waikiki?Im sure as hawaiins u want all torist to stay in waikiki but im just asking honestly.thks hope i didnt bore u guys with my story.

Your chances of staying at the Ko'Olina and getting good waves within 2 miles in either direction are extremely limited. Really...the only spots within walking distance are sketchy at best for the visiting Fla. surfer, especially with no friends to give you a tip on getting in or out. You likely will get jack shit. The rooms are freakin' killer and the grounds nice, but unless you're gonna golf, or have the spa experience, there is painfully little to do other than lay on the man made beach.
Waikiki is a zoo, but your chances for a solid swell in Aug. are good, and there are spots all over the place with no more than 10 people out. Take a 2 mile walk along the water in either direction and something will pop up. Plus..there's something to do when the sun goes down. Plenty tourist chicks.
Throw me a e-mail when you get in, and maybe I can show you a spot or two...'cept you'll have to deal with a lb'er.

Tks Haoleboy i will do that.Last time i came i didnt get to surf with anybody out there and was stuck on waikiki for 10 days not to complain with surfing publics but im sure theyre are some waves around that make me forget about publics lol Anyways thks for help guys didnt want to make reservations and get skunked nothing worse than that.Its not exactly cheap for flights to honalulu in summer time thats a long flight but worth every secound.

Ok Flasurf - How bad do you want to surf come August? There either will be some S, or God willing, some freak N, and everyone whose aware will be drooling. Check last years Aug. swell. Like HB said, you wanna drop a line, Willing to drag you around when I am off work, FP, CW, or myriad of S shore spots that you can neverever speak of again....Nah.

Lotsa spots besides Publics. S shore, summer, ...stretch the legs.

i don't know if you booked your flight and hotel yet, but coming from florida, i think it is way more economical to go to costa rica or panama. you might score while you are here, but i heard you can get $99 flights from florida to costa rica and there are tons of uncrowded waves to be had there.

I'm not an expert on either places BLah has a good suggestion, Costa rica produces solid souths that time of year. Hawaii does too but I think Costa has a better angle with less island blockage from the south pacific.
I've hit Hawaii in October on several occasions and that is a fun time of year in my opinion. Souths are still hitting and some fun early season norths have surprised me with very fun conditions with a manageable crowd. See if you can postpone your trip from August to October and Hawaii might be the call. If not, and August is your only time, then I'd look into Costa Rica/Panama/Nicaragua because of swell and $$.

I can third the CR idea if you are planning a surf trip in the summer and you haven't already booked your trip. Fun, consistent waves. The place caters to surfers. Personally I would way rather be in Costa in the Summer than Oahu.

Summertime surfing in Hawaii can be tough, and very crowded. I almost don't even surf in the summertime anymore, too much work looking for a good spot .

But if you do come here, good luck meng!

obviously besides the cheap airfare to central america the lodging and food will be cheap.

honestly, there's a good chance you will get skunked without a car here trying to surf the westside in august.

but then again, you might have to brush up on your spanish, especially if you want to "call out" some costa rica local over the internet.
