Surf Spot Names (article)
How does a surf spot get named? And how does that name stick? These mundane thoughts torment my mind on those days when I can't surf...
Yet another article for my Road Runner Hawaii column, this time on Surf Spot Names. Check it out.
Just for fun, also try out my North Shore Surf Spot Wordsearch. How many of the spots have you surfed?
Also, let's hear your favorite surf spot name. (Would appreciate if you would also post it on the Visitor Feedback form at the bottom of the story.)
Finally, this spot is one of my favorite surf spot names. Do you know?

It looks like the Gas Chambers section of Sandy's maybe.
I also guess "Green Lanterns," which was named after the bar across the street. The bar actually was bought by and re-named after my grandfather, but the first name stuck. It would have been cool to have a spot named after a family member.
Two spot names I like:
1) Skin Graft Rights in Samoa.
2) Sh**kickers, although I only heard about it, I never surfed it.
EDIT: Neo, you really take some beautiful pictures - that shot of Tracks in your article is unreal - why do I never catch it like that
Also, I just figured out why you are "Neo-sponge" - I just thought you liked the Matrix or something, I never realized it was because of your first name I'm a little slow.

Brah, it's just like, just get the best barrels ever dude. Just like, pull in, just get spit right out of it, drop in & just smack the lip, WHUH-PACK!! Drop in, BARAAH!!! Then after that, just riding the barrel & get pitted, SO PITTED, like that.

Cool topic!
is that "I dont know's"?
anyone here ever surf "tits?" (named for the shape of the mountains in front of the break)
How about generally wimpy spots with names like "suicides" or "tombstones?"
Here are some other cool spot names I know about:
explosions
Poilies (how did it get that name?!?!?)
5-0's (cops used to sit there and give tickets)
Razorbacks
Glass Doors

Sponge does it again
Great article sponge! John Clark also has a great book on surf spot names.
I always liked " Incons " - cause it is inconsistent
" Cornicopias " - cause the wave breaks in the shape of the Thanksgiving horn 'o plenty
" Manatads " - after the bro' who surfed it.
All time favorite still gotta be China Walls - 'cause the 1st guys out were learning about the great wall of China in school - Who says cutting school dont learns ya something!
