Surfing is Hard and Takes a LONG TIME to LEARN
I browse a lot of surf forums and not surprisingly see the same issues from noobs come up all the time. Here's something that I've been thinking about for you guys to disseminate. Please check my math while you're at it -
If you ride a wave every 8 minutes = appx 7 waves/hour = 21 waves per 3 hour session
If an avg ride is 10 seconds ... 21 waves = 210 sec (3.5 minutes) of actual wave riding per session
If you can do 3 (three hour) sessions per week = 630 seconds (10.5 minutes) minutes of actual wave riding, 8.9 hours of paddling/waiting per week
546 minutes (9.1 hours) per year of actual wave riding
28080 minutes (468 hours) of paddling/waiting per year

evr notice the best surfers are always excellent paddlers?
that is what makes the longboard so unpopular, the fact that it makes even the most out of shape obesities able to outpaddle, therefore, catch more waves than non-longboarders.
wanna surf really good?
develop your paddling strength, endurance, explosiveness...
if you can't get there faster than anyone else, it ain't yur wave...

wouldn't that mean surfing is easy? i mean if Jah has been surfing for 27hours and let's say he charges pipe, sunset, waimea that's really good.
or if i or another longboarder can hang 10, 5, heels, etc ,and ride 10ft+ waves with confidence and still do longboard "tricks" with only 25 hours.
look at bonga, andy and the rest of the crew. how many hours have they been doing it? or how about Tudor?
surfing is just too easy. now skateboarding takes years of practice.

just saw your above post bud, I haven't seen anything formal. i've thought about similar ideas of how little you ride a wave vs. hours in the water but your above calculation is probably the most formal i've seen. I'll do a few quick searches later, see if I find anything.
Though shall be nice to everything that moves

okay, first remove your "sissy strap". this is also known as a leash.
then, go surf waimea, sunset, lani's or makaha when it's 4XOH.
then, tell me it's easy.
surfing has one of the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOngest learning curves in existence...
according to the catching wave/paddling ratio. riding all those spots will still be easy. you spend 10 minutes out there and catch 1 wave and ride then you're good
now, drop in a 12ft halfpipe and do a switch stance 360 heelflip w/in a 10 minute time limit and i seriously doubt you'll make it.
skating takes years to master/get good. surfing just several hours to master/get good.
the proof is posted in Bud's message (9 hours a year)
now rusty k is good! he drops in 40ft waimea switchstance, while the other surfers are just trying to drop in doing their normal stance.
how many hours has he surfed?
even surfers are pissed that ther "skateboad" invention flew off the charts. example, surfers are just recently busting airs, whereas skaters have been doing it since the 70's. just look at shortboarding all their tricks are copies of skater's tricks. rodney mullen was doing all the tech flip tricks in the early 80's, mid 90's come and "street skaters" are doing all his moves.
in summary, it takes several hours to get good at surfing and years to get good skating the proof is posted in Bud's message (9 hours a year)

checked the website...cool.
next your going to have to work on nollie kickflip to tail slide, if you can't do it already. i haven't skated seriously for about 6 years. The Plan B video that came out in 96/97? was bad ass!!
i was way into the Blind, World Industry, plan b family of decks. big Brother magazine ruled back then, but i heard steve rocco sold it and it settled down a bit.
