I think black's has some of the most power here in sothern california, a few exceptions. The place is magical, except the crowds in the past 3 years, uggh! UCSD is right on top of the cliff, students surfing it all day if it's under DOH.
I took stickman there on a micro 6 inch day. sorry stick, wish there were waves.
Anyway, it has the cleanest water in san diego due to huge canyons directly off the break, not sure how deep but heard 1,000ft+, this creates a lot of upwelling.
The deep canyons provide limited shelf drag enabling steep swells to filter in that don't hit any other part of the coast. It's usually 3ft+ bigger (face value) on any given day than other local spots. I've seen it handle waves as big as San Diego gets without closing out, which is impressive for a beach break. (Although it does close out with certain swell directions/period) Goes both right and left depending on the swell, paddle is a little difficult on bigger days. 3 main peaks up and down the beach, middle peak is probably the best and produces very big and round barrels. In terms of San Diego waves, it has a lot of juice, long hold downs, long barrels, powerful sections and can be a blast if you're in the right spot at the right time. I love the wave!!!
It's a mini puerto escondido when it's big.
Anyone comes and visits, let me know, I'll make sure we go!
