The Obsession of Surfing

Postby neosponge » Tue Jun 01, 2004 1:08 am

Wrote another article for my Road Runner Hawaii column, this time on the surfing obsession. Please check it out here.

#4. You have tons of surf magazines stashed throughout the house, and occasionally still pore over them from cover-to-cover.

I used to have the sickest surf mag collection, had to give it up moving around and stuf.....I love looking at old mags.

Did you know they have a semi-complete collection of surfer mags going back like 20 years at UH Manoa library?

Did not know that. I'm in the painful process of throwing away some old mags. Really hard for a packrat like me.

DON'T THROW OUT THAT RIPTIDE! The yellow Riptide by your left knee, I'm on page 40 and they even have my name spelled right. My issue is trashed because I used to keep it in my car just in case some hot chick wanted to see it.

Kelly,
that riptide is one of my favorites of all time. I remember that pic of you and thinking "gotdamn!". My old bb friends and I used to look at that one over and over....

Neo,
Have you seen the movie Whale Rider...
they have some of the best surf I have ever seen in a non-surfing movie. I think it's filmed in NZ and all the waves are light offshore beachbreak A-frames!!!

I did a perfect spread eagle cartwheel a spilt second after he took the shot.

Kelly, Forgot to tell you that my French friend Alex wanted to bodyboard Inside Sunset. The only reason I could imagine why is that shot of you. You're an inspiration!

Yes! Pretty neat film. I noticed the waves, but didn't think they were epic. Gotta watch it again now.

Slight tangentiation, some of the Hobbit actors (filming in NZ) got hooked on surfing. "Gandalf you old longboard kook! Get off of my wave," said Frodo.

Neo,
the waves aren't epic...but you will find yourself mind surfing them..haha.

Kelly,
How did they get your name?

That poor BZ in the bottom right hand corner is about to get destroyed! Or atleast have the leash plug ripped out of it.

Damn Kelly! That is such a farking sick pic! That's 2 monster shots I've seen of you now. It must seem like such a mellow wave out in front yer house. (While I'm out there panicking over some 4 ft town beating.. :D )

I too used to have the choke Surf mag collection, but ex-wife tossed 'em.
Owoooooooo!!

Just cant throw away stoke inducing mags, now can we????

Anyone else not able to ditch those puka'd out board shorts too? I seem to not be able to get rid of my favorites, wear 'em till they are so thin you GOTTA wear bbd's......

Nice article neo, and the new Makani LB looks sick! (SB too) ...

Kelly - the permenant stoke factor for ya must be higher than shit. That -even w/ a cartwheela- is a sick shot.

Great Article. Has anyone seen Troy ?

The surf was thumping in the background during the beach landing/ battle scene. The surf wasn't perfect or anything but the shorebreak was pounding, no way theres that much energy in the Mediteranean Sea.
.
Read in a mag that it was filmed in Mexico.
