Point Panics

Postby Kelly7873 » Thu May 13, 2004 9:26 am

I'm a bit confused by the Star Bulletin article. The article says that Panics is "restricted to body surfers. Body boards and surfboards are prohibited." It also says "Point Panic and Makapuu are the only two surf spots that have areas designated solely for body surfing." Everyone knows that bodyboarding is allowed at Makapuu." From what I can read from the rules on the DLNR web site bodyboarding is allowed at Panics too. The DLNR rules states:"§13-254-14 Restrictions. (a) No person shall
operate a surfboard in the restricted area of the Point
Panic ocean waters.
(b) Restricted area. Point Panic ocean waters are
primarily reserved for bathing, swimming and bodysurfing,
and paipo board riding subject to restrictions
prescribed in these rules."
"Paipo boards" means any type of board that is (a) without
skegs, (b) does not exceed four feet in length, and (c) is
used for the sport of surfriding.
How do they get away with posting signs saying bodyboards aren't allowed? Do they bust bodyboarders too or just surfers?
I don't mind the bodysurfers having there own spot and I haven't gone out there since the signs went up some 15 years ago but I do think it's bull that they bust people when there aren't even any body surfers in the water. I think they should open it up more like they do at Makapuu where the surfers are allowed to go out early and late in the day.

I agree they should close it for bodysurfing between 8-5pm. Anyways, those bodysurfers can't make the wave anyways. If it was me I'd open it up entirely for surfing. Send the bodysurfers to Sandys.

Seems kinda odd that they would single out paipo boards too - I would think more pain is involved getting hit by a paipo board then a bodyboard. Maybe cause the number of paipo boarders is so small they didn't think it would have much of an impact including them in the "permitted" section?

aloha kelly7873,
what you found is a loop hold. go down there, bodyboard the break and if you get a ticket for being on the bodyboard, fight it in court. IT'S EASY, JUST PRINT OUT THE ABOVE LAWS AND SHOW THE JUDGE. THE JUDGE WILL DISMISS THE CASE BECAUSE YOU DID THE RESEARCH AND HAVE PROOF OF THE DLNR RULES FOR POINTPANIC.
now everybody lets go bodyboarding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always go right , unless theres choke bodysurfers cause they catch an attitude quick.
I think it pretty safe to surf out there early or late in the day.
If theres a swell on the weekend dont go right , they will get you.
Theres a guy with a whistle and he'll give you a warning before calling the coast guard to come and confiscate your board and give you a tix.
I've seen it happen. be carefull and smart , and its all good.

Just to say Bodysurfing Point Panic should be a designated spot.

If'n you get caught, so be it. Rules, unfortunately, and perhaps unfairly, is rules. If we dont like it, its up to us to change it.

DLNR - part of the reason I sold (and took a loss on 2 Jetskis) is them - They are in the business of protection of the Land & Natural resources. BUT - the fines and tix are CRIMINAL - not parking tix kind, but criminal. You lose in court, you got a RECORD. There are some of the DLNR staff that concerned enuf to educate those (like me) who may not be the brightest star in the sky - to the rules & regs. But (again) there are those who are so high on the POWER TRIP aspect of the duty, that they are just, well, assholes.

For me I saw both sides of the DLNR staff - those who would help to interpet the Maunalua Bay sign (written in Manadarin-swahili-jibberish) and what was allowed, and not allowed. On the other side, the babooze who tix my wife and family, and forced us into court, only to be shot to shreds by his own ineptitude.

Go figure.

I used to surf the mushy lefts off PP almost everyday...Some peeps call it Cylinders., whatevers, it can be decent, but nearby kewalos will be great when its on.....anyways, the official rule is, you have to stay west of the NO Surfing sign, but everyone inches towards the Right point expecially when there are no bodysurfers around....there are some aggro bodysurfer guys that I sympathize with, they need to protect there spot!! But there is an older Hawaiian/haole guy that is extremely aggresive, he will yank your lease and vberbally abuse you if you are anywhere near where they are...i've even seen him chase a girl surfer out of the water, only to be confronted by her boyfirend who was wathcing on the rocks...they calle dthe cops and handcuffed the bodysurfer way, after putting his face in the cement sidewalk first! Ouch!

I've seent he DLNR rangers twice...they will ticket and confiscate your boards, end of story....They will not let you off....So Moral is: stay to the legal side of hte sign, especeaill if the bodysurfers are around..
