im moving to oahu in 2 weeks. i have found a place to stay in ewa beach, walking distance from the beach. im wondering what the breaks are like there and if there is a strong local presence there. i have surfed in places all over the south america, and the mainland u.s., so im use to giving much respect to local people. i will be working in honolulu so i wanna live close to work but be able to surf each day too. if anyone could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

there are some high quality spots but you have to be really on top of the local knowledge.

I'll pass on some basics but the rest you'll have to have at it yourself

most of the better known breaks are typically soft & mushy, dominant tradewinds blow side-onshore. sandy-murky waters, inner breaks are usually sand/coral bottom, stays mostly shallow till you reach the outer reefs. almost always something to ride (tradeslop) if you're not picky and/or desperate. as an unfamiliar face you might run into some problems if you stumble into a less-known spot but there's a big military presence at the better known spots especially White Plains, where no one will hassle you - waist to chest highmushburger waves can be pretty fun but don't be expecting barrels there

Dont wanna burst your bubble, but traffic to and from Honolulu is gonna be a NIGHTMARE unless you are going to be working odd hours... Every Ewa Beach resident I know hates the traffic mess down there!

i'm gonna be working at night so i hope that traffic is not to bad from ewa beach to honolulu. right now i live in phoenix, so im very used to at least an hour or more commute to work and even longer to get home. i also lived in san diego where traffic is a zoo. i'm just happy to finally get back in the water each day. no more 6 hour drives to cali for a weekend of waves. thanks for the advice. oh, any thoughts on how to fit in with everyone would be much appreciated. i know how to show respect. i just dont want to be thought of as another newcomer invading your waves and then leaving. i'm not leaving. oahu will be my new home, for good.

That's it. You'll be fine. There are some agressive people, but there aren't to many rampant beatings anymore...just don't be a dick.

Watch out for people who seem to be 'too friendly'. There's a cottage industry of ripping off fresh malahini, especially in town.

i definitely wont be a dick. im the new one. i definitely respect the rights of locals. each one of us has or had to earn respect at any break. no one has the right to just paddle out and own it. as far as beatings go, i'll avoid that and hopefully make some friends. i'll be cool with everyone and ill be on the watch out for thieves too. those things happen in cali too. hope to see you all in the line up one day. i'm gonna spend the first 2 weeks just checking everything out and meeting people.

aloha..i used to surf at wp all last summer...mornings were great as eveyone was usually at work ..i surfed over by fenceline area, be careful of shallow at low tide

sometimes i noticed the water smelled funny?? could be just me

i met some of the most fantastic folk out there...they surfed the 'diamond' side of wp, not in front of the snack shack..the other direction...very nice, always a wave for everyone

a smile goes a long way...
