A 23-year-old Mililani man died yesterday after a surfing accident on Oahu’s North Shore.

The man was identified as Joshua Kalai Nakata. He apparently hit his head on the reef while surfing at the Banzai Pipeline surf spot off Ehukai Beach Park at about 3:15 p.m., said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman.

The waves were about 6 to 8 feet at the time, Cheplic said.

Lifeguards pulled Nakata out the water and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived. Rescuers took the man to Kahuku Hospital in critical condition. He died later at the hospital, Cheplic said.
