Bud, I noticed the picture of the satellite tagged turtle (L1) in your report from Sunday. I passed the picture on to the turtle research group at work (National Marine Fisheries Service) in case they were interested. Being the ones who tagged it they were. They are hoping you can pass on any observations about the turtle, such as how often you have seen it, its general condition, etc. Anything would be helpful.
Thanks,
Joe

Howzit Joe;
That was taken this past Sunday about noon at the newest north shore tourist attraction (the cove on the Lanis side of Holtons paddle out).
Didn't surf Lanis as much this year & dunno how many of those guys are swimming around with the beacons, but pretty sure thats the same one I've seen 2-3 times out in the lineup near the north peak boil on a few sizable days late this season. Like most nowadays it seems healthy; I don;t recall/notice many with tumors/weird growths like I used to see so often years back.
Like most of the bigger ones, it shows little concern about being near surfers or being in the impact zone of a pitching DOH. In fact, like many of them, it seems to enjoy suddenly surfacing close enough to make you jump out of your skin.
Hope this is helpful in some way.

Bud, thanks for the info. I passed it on to the turtle people and they are grateful. Here are some specifics on that individual turtle.
L1 is an adult male -85.3cm straight carapace length- and long time resident and basking turtle of Laniakea. His left hind flipper is half-missing due to a shark bite (the "L1" on his shell is also helpful to ID him.) He was satellite tagged with the device that is on him in the picture on 2/23/07 in the hopes that we'd track him to the NWHI to mate... but he's still here...
Thanks again,
Joe

Glad to help, and thanks for the interesting info. Do you mind if I cut & paste this exchange and post it to the forum? I think the BB crew and lurkers would find it interesting also []
