Wazup you'll,
I'm wondering I just found out last week that the board that I"m riding is the wrong type of board for me and I need a fish board. Does anyone know the best place to get a used one in good condition or a brand new one that's not that expensive,

What kind of board do you ride right now: length, # of fins, what kind of tail (pin, rounded , squash etc)
What is your height and weight?
How long have you been surfing? Actually i think my question should be do you have any experience riding waves, even with a bodyboard?
Where do you live? Do you even live in Hawaii?
Last what makes you think you need a fish to be able to learn to surf?

Hmmm let me go over my questions, to see where you got the aggro-tude from...
1st question---totally legit, lets us know what he is riding currently.
2nd question---totally legit, as it relates to what size of board would be best.
3rd question---Well maybe there might be a misunderstanding, I am just trying to figure out how long he/she has been riding. And if they have almost no time riding a stand up board I am trying to gauge their ocean water time experience. (for example boogie boarders know how to duck dive and basic knowledge of ocean waves) and I am not refering to someone of Kelly's caliber but maybe this person has been a weekend warrior for 6 months and moved up to a surfboard for all I know. So third question is legit and not meant to be confused as aggro.
4th question---totally legit question, as this person makes no reference to even living in Hawaii, and on their info page there is no reference as to where they live, for all we know he could be in Florida or Puerto Rico. And I asked him where he lived because he asked the members where he could get a fish. Even if he did live in Hawaii, he might not live on Oahu. To assume is to make an ASS-(of)-U-(and)-ME. So I believe this question is also legit.
5th and last question--- this is a straight forward question that I ask anyone when they come telling me they need a specific board to learn to surf, because I want to hear what others have told them and to also hear why they believe it is the best board for them. Sometimes its good advice they have been told sometimes they have been told pure garbage. Maybe this question has no legitimacy, but it isnt aggro.
I may not be a pro or even really good--- hell I consider myself to just be fair in terms of skill of riding and doing tricks, though I am awesome at wave selection, out manuevering others on the peak (note** I am not a wave hog I wait patiently for the perfect wave sometimes waiting a long time), and I can ride a mean barrel front or backside. I have been surfing on almost a daily basis since I was 7 and I am now 34 so I got my water time in, I charge hard, been scared on big days when it is 3xoh but i still paddle out and take off usually not eating it. And I have been known to go out even when it is 1-2 ft slop. I have taught quite a few people to surf and I really wanted to help this person.
So Kahea before giving me lip why dont you sign in, besides tell me what advice you could have given this person with what they asked?

Now Kahea, i did a little checking and question #4 is a totally legit question because surfing is life doesnt even live in freakin HAWAII.

New board
I know I don't live in Hawaii and if you have any idea about geography Myrtle Beach is in South Carolina not in North Carolina. But right now i'm surfing a 6' 2" short board w/ a rounded tail. But I was told that in only 6' sets that this type of board was not the best one to learn on and it has 3 fins. But i was told that in about 6' to 7' waves i need to be surfin' a fish board with a swall fin. And if you don't live in anywhere near N.C to S.C then sorry but i don't need your help b/c i need to know where the best place to buy a board would be. But thanks w/ what ever help you guys give me.

hey surflingislife...A thruster (3 fins) is probably good for any conditions you need.
the basics are like this, as far as i see it... anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong:
the longer the board, the faster you can paddle it. you need a longer board for bigger waves since you need more speed to paddle into them
the wider/thicker the board, the more stable it is.
So assuming you shortboard, you need to figure out the size of board depending on the conditions you surf, and how much experience you have.
I think the guy was basically suggesting your board was too small (thin) for the experience you have, try a longer thicker board for a while and you might find it easier to catch more waves and fall off less == more fun!
I don't mean to make assumptions about your skill level, but it sounds like you're pretty much beginning. if you are beginning (less than 2 years surifng regularly) try a fun board to start out like a 7' to 8' by around 20" wide. when you start to feel comfortable turning this, move shorter and thinner (again assuming you want to shortboard)
if you have mates that have different boards, try a few different shapes and sizes and see which ones work best, and which ones don't... pick the board that you have most fun on, not the one you think looks best!
