New shortboard

Postby Beachbum » Mon Oct 23, 2006 6:41 pm

I was wondering what brand and size shortboard I should purchase? My current 6'6" is in pretty bad shape by my recent fixies  and I feel like its too big for me. I'm around 5'7" and weigh 110 lbs. My friends were telling me HIC boards are good and they seem like good boards but I'm not sure what dimensions to choose so anyone got any tips?

Do you regularly make it past breaking sections? Can you bottom turn, cut back frontside & backside? Can you duck dive?

what fin config (tri fin, single, twin)? what are the width & thickness dims & what makes you 'feel like' your 6'6" is too big? sounds bout right for a beginner at your height & weight, as long as you can go surf on a regular basis, e.g. at least 3-4 two hour sessions a week, you should make good progress with it.

for this stage you're at, the logo on the board makes little difference and buying a new board is a waste of money

I'm able to duckdive under pretty big waves such as last weekend at the south shore. I'm able to bottom turn but need to work on cutbacks but I understand the concept of going up the wave and then turning your head to look back at the bottom and using your shoulders to turn back down the face.

Get a 12' soft-top with handles.
