curing a surfboard

hey guys, had a friend asking if you needed to let a brand new stick cure a month before you surf it. I think I remember you guys saying there's no difference as glass cures in a couple days. anyways, any info would be awesome. mahalos...

Go surf....once the shaper gives it you, you can ride it unless they say otherwise. If you buy it from a shop its had plenty of time already.

for eons, I've heard people on both sides of the cure/no need cure issue.

way back I read an article where Parmenter explained the chemical reactions involved. Bottom line, he said (unless you live in super cold temps) by the time a board is ready to be sanded, the resin has cured. If there's surf I usually have a tailpad on and the board in the ocean the same day I pick it up. My current 5'10" was shaped on a Thursday and I had it in the surf the next week (Friday)

I asked BAMMBAMM recently for his view but he's too scared to show his face around here anymore

nowadays, UV resin is more common and adds to the picture (15 minutes in direct sun = good to go, is what I was told by those who should know)

I've been told over the years, the same thing, once the board moves to the sanding process, the resin is as solid as it's going to get. Some argue that it's not the resin or "curing time", but the strength of the blank. I've noticed differences in boards that were Clark vs. Burford blanks and even Super Green vs. Blue, but when it comes down to it, who cares, as long as it works good

yep, exactly - I'm in no way any expert, yet I'm pretty sure there are lots of other variables involved afa how strong a board ends up. The blank, how much deep the shaping went, skill of the glasser, sander, what kind of cloth, how many layers & where, the lap. I think the whole curing thing is the least of the concerns for the average surfer buying a new board.

I've looked around a bit at swaylocks.com but have yet to find any of the experts flat out say one way or the other.

Maybe I'll post a question and see what they say

Surfer (Oahu) orders a custom board 6'0" glassed w/ 2 - 4oz on top, 1 4oz bottom (not UV resin), sanded finish. 2 weeks later he gets a call that the board was finished yesterday and is ready for pick up.

Is there any need to let this board "cure" (how long and why)?

As i thought, looks like 50/50 in that particular batch of responses.

some saying wait 1-2 weeks
others saying it's sanded, it's cured, go surf.

thanks for the info guys. i had another friend talk to George Downing and according to him you need to let the board sit for 1 month or you'll get more pressure dents. seems like I've been hearing both sides to the argument....
